Grandmaster Sheng-Yen Lu,
Book 280: Heavens and the Great Beyond
Chapter 24: Purity of Body, Speech, and Mind
Provisional Translation by Meet True Buddha

…by practicing the purity of body, speech, and mind in this way, one can open the heart within the heart and validate the heavens beyond the heavens…

The True Buddha Sutra states:

“The Dharma Jewel is the purity of body, speech, and mind.”

A disciple once asked me, “How do we practice this diligently?”

I used to answer:

  • The body remains still.
  • The mouth remains silent.
  • The mind remains free of thought.
  • This is the purity of body, speech, and mind.

One day, in the heavens beyond heavens, I met Vajrasattva.

Vajrasattva told me, “Grandmaster Lu, your answer to your disciples about the purity of body, speech, and mind is too brief. While it is correct, you need to teach them the method.”

I said, “I thought they all understood!”

Vajrasattva said, “Many still do not know, Grandmaster Lu! You should teach them!”

Therefore, I wrote this text, as instructed by Vajrasattva.

I’d say, to truly cultivate stillness of body, silence of speech, and freedom from thought, the method is as follows:

Stillness of the body:

  1. Sit in the vajra full-lotus posture.
  2. Place your hands in the meditation mudra below the navel.
  3. Keep your spine straight.
  4. Open the shoulders.
  5. Slightly tuck in your chin.
  6. Press your tongue against the upper palate.
  7. Close your eyes.

(This is the method of bodily stillness, also known as the Seven-Point Posture of Vairocana.)

Silence of speech:

  1. Exhale impure breath.
  2. Inhale pure breath.
  3. Remain silent and at ease.

(This is the method of speech stillness.)

Freedom from thought:

  1. Do not dwell on the past.
  2. Do not think about the future.
  3. Do not contemplate the present.

Furthermore:

  • Do not intend.
  • Do not create.
  • Do not think about the empty nature.
  • Do not distinguish right from wrong.
  • The mind does not dwell.
  • The mind is natural.
  • The mind is relaxed and open.

(Abandon all contemplations and thoughts.)

This means: Do not contemplate, do not think, do not analyze, do not practice for realization, do not evaluate, but naturally abide.

I’d say, by practicing the purity of body, speech, and mind in this way, one can open the heart within the heart and validate the heavens beyond the heavens, achieving supreme realization in path of cultivation.

  1. Perception & awareness (觉受)
  2. Light (光明)
  3. Validation and realization (证量)

This is my true speech, based on my learning and experience in Buddhism, the views of all my supreme gurus, and my own realization.

Someone asked, “What about all the esoteric practices of Vajrayana?”

I answered, “This is just the preliminary stage for entering samadhi; there are still the main practice and the concluding practice!”

(Only by gathering the causes can one realize the fruition.)
